Kia is entering the electric car market with a bang. The new EV6 is a high-performance crossover expected to go on sale in the United States later this year — though it will be available in Europe first, where it has already received thousands of reservations.
Built on an all-new dedicated platform for battery electric vehicles, the Kia EV6 is aggressively designed and looks more like a grand touring sedan than a utility vehicle despite its categorization as a crossover. That seems to be the intent, as Kia has named the top-of-the-line model the EV6 GT.
Using front and rear electric motors, the Kia EV6 GT will produce up to 577 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque. The automaker expects a top speed of 162 mph and a 0-62 mph acceleration of 3.5 seconds. Several powertrain configurations will be offered to provide customers with a variety of range-extending options that work for their budgets.
Though the EV6 is the automaker’s first dedicated BEV, there are many more to come. Kia plans to launch 11 new BEVs by 2026, which will help it achieve its goal of 40 percent global electrified sales by the end of the decade.
“EV6 is the embodiment of the new Kia. It is born to inspire every journey, through bold design, progressive engineering, innovative technologies, and exciting electric performance,” said Ho Sung Song, president and CEO of Kia. “EV6 also represents the beginning of Kia’s long-term commitment to sustainable mobility, accelerating the transition not only to clean transportation, but also products, materials and manufacturing.”
